Grating in the Renewable Energy
Industry
June 2024
Grating is an increasingly used material in various applications. Its structural capacity, the durability and flow capacity of liquids and dust gives this material unique and ideal characteristics for applications in industry and construction.
One of these applications is in the renewable energy industry, more exactly in the wind industry.
Grating is the material used inside the vast majority of wind towers all over the world, being used as a floor of the various levels that travel from the floor to the highest point of the towers.
Grating is used inside these towers precisely because it is a structurally resistant material and allows ventilation between all levels of the towers as it allows air to pass between the steel bar mesh.
Stainless stainless or galvanized finishing can be used. Galvanised grating are usually used in these towers, as they represent a smaller cost to the stainless range and also have great corrosion resistance.
The mesh normally used in this type of gradis has to be fit for the 20mm sphere test. It has quadments with squares of less than 20mm to ensure that no object with the dimensions equal to or greater than a 20mm sphere can fall into the lower floors.
This is a safety measure to avoid occupational accidents caused by the fall of heavy objects on workers.
